You can help protect bears from being abused for entertainment

On a remote, mountain road in northern Pakistan, government representatives intercept a vehicle. Acting on information received from our partner, Bioresource Research Centre (BRC), the authorities search the vehicle. Hidden amongst a stack of boxes are five sacks. Inside each sack is a small, terrified bear cub.

When the sacks are opened, it takes a long time for the traumatised cubs to even open their eyes. And, because they’ve been piled on top of each other, the two bears at the bottom have been struggling to breathe and are close to death.

While many bear cubs around the world spend their first years of life with their mums, playing with their siblings and learning to forage for food, these cubs were torn from their families to be used for horrendous bear baiting and bear dancing.

Imagine the poor cubs having their little paws burnt to train them to “dance” for money! Their sensitive nose pierced to attach a painful nose ring through it! Imagine them tied to a stake and set upon by aggressive dogs, forced to defend their life without teeth or claws!

Luckily their story has a different, and happier, ending. They were discovered before they could undergo cruel, inhumane training practices all for the sake of so-called “entertainment”. They were saved and brought to the peaceful haven of the Balkasar bear sanctuary in Pakistan.

At World Animal Protection, we’re working to bring a permanent end to the tradition of using bears for entertainment and for traditional medicine in the horrific bear bile industry in Asia. We work with two partner bear sanctuaries, one in Pakistan, the Balkasar Sanctuary, and one in Romania, the Libearty Sanctuary.

Your kindness could help give bear cubs freedom from a life of pain and cruelty and help protect other vulnerable animals around the world.

$41 could help protect bears abused for entertainment.

$79 could help prevent bear cubs being taken from the wild.

$124 could help to expand the Balkasar bear sanctuary.
