Only cruelty keeps elephants in entertainment

Pang Dow’s name means lucky star. But after being torn away from her mother as a baby, this poor elephant endured years of cruelty in the name of entertainment – begging on busy streets when she was young, and later giving rides in a trekking camp for hours on end, weighed down by tourist after tourist.

Elephants in Thailand like Pang Dow are stolen from their mothers as babies. To make them accept rides and other human contact, they are restrained, starved and beaten into submission in a brutal training process known as ‘the crush’.

This trauma can last for a lifetime, leaving some elephants suffering post-traumatic stress.

In camps they are chained up and isolated from their natural social groups without proper nutrition or vet care, and controlled with sharp bull hooks that cause serious injuries and infections.

This exploitation is prominent in Asia. Now, it is even spreading throughout southern Africa.

Most tourists don’t know about the intense physical and psychological pain elephants in entertainment suffer. With your help, World Animal Protection is working with tour operators to stop offering elephant rides and shows, and promote elephant friendly tourism instead. When the demand ends, so will the abuse.

For Pang Dow, life has turned around. She was rescued by our partner, Boon Lott’s Elephant Sanctuary, where she receives proper care, and spends her days roaming in peace through forested land with other elephants.

But many more elephants in entertainment still desperately need your help to stamp out the abuse. Please donate today.

$30 a month could help to educate tourists and lobby tour operators to stop selling tickets to elephant shows

$60 a month could protect elephants from being threatened, and help to re-train people to find new ways of living without abusing wild animals

$125 a month could help develop sustainable solutions for moving elephants exploited for entertainment into wild or semi-wild environments
