Dogs can be every community’s friend
Nobody should ever have to deal with the pain of killing their own dog.
But that’s what happened to Eric, a 17-year-old student from Kenya’s Makueni county.
When one of his beloved dogs was bitten by another dog, Eric couldn’t run the risk that the other dog wasn’t infected with rabies. He had no choice but to put down his dog to protect his other animals, his family and his community.
Local communities are terrified of rabies, which has killed many people and animals. When the threat looms, people in Makueni county and other parts of Africa and Asia respond by killing dogs – usually inhumanely. Every year, countless stray and free-roaming dogs are electrocuted, poisoned, shot or beaten to death in horrific mass cullings.
Many of these dogs die painful deaths that can last hours – and most of them are not even sick with rabies.
These brutal killings do not work. They consistently fail to stop rabies spreading.
You can help us end this futile, inhumane killing. With your help, we can end the cruelty to dogs and create a world where humans and dogs can live together peacefully and safely.
Thanks to the help of our supporters, we have already provided more than one million rabies vaccinations for dogs across Asia and Africa.
We are also working with local communities and governments to provide education, update legislation and implement reproduction control.
Dogs can be every community’s friend if we value and protect them.
You can help put a stop to the cruelty. Please donate today.
$13 a month could help treat 30 dogs with antibiotics to help fight infections and let their wounds heal
$30 a month could help vaccinate 30 dogs against rabies, protecting them from culls during an outbreak
$106 a month could help train one teacher to educate approximately 60 students on rabies, dog welfare and responsible dog ownership
