Help beloved animals survive disaster
Imagine the terror both you and your animal would feel if a natural disaster struck your home. Now imagine the agony of having no choice but to leave your beloved animal behind.
When residents were forced to evacuate Barbuda late last year, they had no choice but to abandon their animals. They weren’t allowed to bring them to safety, before Hurricane Irma devastated the island. Tragically, animals like Mario, a beautiful Staffordshire terrier were left to suffer in fear during 300km winds gusts and surrounded by death and destruction.
Unfortunately, this is a sad reality for many affected by catastrophic disasters. A reality, that together, we can help prevent.
You may hate to think about it, but a natural disaster can happen any time. Australia and many other nations in our region are currently in the midst of cyclone season, posing great danger to our vulnerable family pets and beloved animals.
Disasters such as Hurricane Irma strike the world’s population more than 400 times every year – and these events are expected to increase in scale, severity and frequency.
Each year, we estimate over 40 million animals are severely affected by natural disasters, often dying slow, needless deaths, from infected wounds, stress and starvation.
To survive, these animals need clean food, water, shelter and vet care. Small things like anti-inflammatory medications, antibiotics for wounds, cuts and parasites, and dressings for broken limbs can make all the difference.
That’s why, with your help, we’re lobbying for countries to include animals in their emergency management plans – and why we’re preparing Emergency Vet Kits with dressings for wounded animals, and medicine for the treatment of diarrhoea, pneumonia and other potential disease.
You can help local communities prepare for the worst and be with vulnerable animals on the ground to prevent them from suffering when disaster strikes.
