Give billions of chickens the freedom to live like chickens
In industrial farming, a chick may go her entire life without seeing sunlight.
Bred to grow as fast as possible, she will live in an overcrowded environment, sometimes with less floor space to herself than an A4 piece of paper – forced to stand in her own faeces because of insufficient floor covering. She won’t be able to express natural chicken behaviours such as foraging, perching and dust bathing.
Standing on this dirty floor day in, day out, she may develop painful skin lesions on her feet, legs and breasts. Ammonia in the air from the poor floor covering might give her eye and breathing problems.
To make matters worse, she will have been selectively bred to grow as fast as possible. This rapid growth strains her heart and lungs and makes it difficult and painful for her to move. If the strain is very severe, she risks death from heart failure.
More than 60 billion chickens are farmed for meat every year. Nearly 40 billion of these are farmed industrially in crowded, barren, windowless sheds.
These animals are denied the freedom to behave like chickens and suffer physical and psychological problems, living their lives in pain.
With your help, we can challenge iconic food brands, governments and farmers to join us and make a real difference to the lives of billions of meat chickens.
Your support enables our farming team to fight animal suffering across the food industry, working to deliver higher-welfare solutions and improving the lives of billions of animals.
These chickens desperately need your help to ease their suffering. Please donate today.
$20 could break the cycle of suffering for 12,000 chickens forced to grow too fast
$40 could help 24,000 chickens have more room to live on than an A4 piece of paper
$60 could fund our work to influence food companies to provide better lives for billions of chickens
Where your money goes
World Animal Protection has been protecting animals for over 50 years and we passionately believe that animals matter. With your support, we’ll go where animal suffering is most far-reaching and animal cruelty is most severe.
In 2015, 87% of funds raised went towards protecting animals in our four areas of work. We can ensure your vital donation is making the biggest impact for animals as possible and is helping achieve lasting change.
